Disclosure: As is the case with many other industry/topic specific magazines, websites and trade publications, we do receive compensation from some of the companies whose products we review within and outside of the web hosting industry, including, but not limited to, paid advertising placements, referral fees, contextual advertising links and sponsorship packages.

WestHost has been around since 1998 and, since then, has accumulated over 20,000 active sites. Their packages are competitively priced and contain all the standard features any individual or small business would need to run their site. What makes this company stand out from the others, however, is that all WestHost accounts come with a Virtual Private Server (VPS), meaning users get to install their own applications (not shared ones), have total administrative control (rather than restricted), and do it in an independent and secure (rather than shared) environment. If you don't like to share - then web hosting with WestHost may be just the thing for you.

Price Value

With even WestHost's cheapest plan you still get dedicated web, mail, FTP, and database servers. All packages also include: webmail, Spam & Virus protection, SSL security, a Site Builder, FrontPage support, multiple domain support, and FTP, PHP, and PERL. All plans but the most basic also include: website statistics, SSH (secure shell), content management, blogs, message boards, photo albums, a static IP, and an assortment of search engine advertising tools. Furthermore, all plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Reliability

WestHost upholds its 99.9% uptime guarantee with numerous redundant communications paths and carriers, multiple secondary power sources in case of outages or other emergencies, RAID mirroring, 24/7 security monitoring and regular backups and security upgrades.

The data center is built atop a 3 1/2" thick reinforced matte footing with 9 separate base isolation units bolted to it to act as "shock absorbers" in case of earthquake or other natural disaster. The facilities utilize non-toxic, people-safe Inergen fire suppression technology. Uninterruptible power is assured with 750-volt Caterpillar generators backed up by a battery supply able to run the entire network for 15 minutes, even though the generators only take 90 seconds to come online.

Physical security measures include perimeter fencing, biometric entries, card access, intrusion detection scanners, and mantraps. Software security measures include host-based virus protection and firewalls.

WestHost uses multiple DS-3 connections that are scalable to at least OC-48. Redundant telecommunications paths to the local fiber optic infrastructure, all supported by multiple carriers with T1 connections, are buried throughout the data center grounds. ATT&T, Global Crossing, and XO are among their carriers.

Control Panel

WestHost users enjoy a proprietary control panel called Site Manager that's been designed to give you total control. Within this facile interface you can add, modify, and delete your own email and FTP logins, manage your DNS and domains, see real time stats on your disk space and bandwidth usage, install and modify whatever program you wish, manage all your servers (FTP, email, and web), and sleep easy with complete Backup and Restore functionality. The control panel is conveniently broken down into 5 logical categories: Site Details, Email/FTP Management, Site Management, Site Applications, and Domain Management.

Customer Support

Beyond the exhaustive Help documentation, user guides and forums, tutorials, glossaries, FAQs, and searchable Knowledgebases, further help can be garnered by toll-free telephone, live web chat, and of course email support ticket - all of it 24x7x365.
