In the market for over 15 years now, Kaspersky Antivirus has developed its name to be known as one of the most trusted brands in the world when it comes to protection from computer viruses and spyware. Kaspersky anti virus gives users the protection they need from known viruses and proactive detection from viruses that haven’t been discovered yet. The software is easy to install and doesn’t require a restart, and once you’re up and running it’s simple to customize it to perform how you want it to.

Our Kaspersky Antivirus review will give you everything you need to know to make an informed decision on which product you choose to protect your PC.

Price/Value

At a price of $39.95 for protection of 1 PC for 1 year, the cost is a bit more wallet-friendly than the rest of the pack. The features included are well worth the price.  Users will have real-time protection, anti-phishing, instant safety checks and hybrid protection - utilizing the power of the cloud, in combination with signature-based protection. The product offers more than what users have come to expect from antivirus software. One thing that is for certain, they’ve perfected the features for which they do provide, offering exceptional protection against viruses, and an excellent ability to heal infected computers.

If you’re looking to protect more than one computer, you can select 3 computers for 1 year of protection for $59.95, however; if you’re going to take this route you may want to look at getting the Internet Security package, as it is comparible in price and you get more features.

Protection

Kaspersky Antivirus offers everything a user needs to keep their computer free of viruses and other malware. Its real-time protection keeps users safe from known, new, and emerging viruses, spyware and malware. The software also has the ability to proactively detect unknown malware and ensure any vulnerabilities won’t be exploited, keeping the user’s computer safe and secure.

Automatic Exploit Prevention allows the antivirus software to control the launch of vulnerable applications in order to not expose the computer to threats. It also has the ability to analyze program behaviour and determine if the behaviour is similar to any malicious programs.

Repair

In the event a user’s computer is so infected with malware Kaspersky Antivirus can’t be installed, you can download a tool to scan your PC and remove the threat in order to complete a clean install. If a user’s computer is so infected it won’t even boot, you can use the included Rescue CD to clean the infections and install Kaspersky anti virus.

Even in the event unknown malware does get through the antivirus software and in to a user’s system, Kaspersky Antivirus includes a System Watcher which will detect dangerous behaviour and allow a user to undo or rollback most malicious actions.

User Interface

Easy to use and very simplistic, the user interface for Kaspersky Antivirus gets the job done. While it’s nothing to write home about, when it comes to protecting a computer, looks don’t really need to count for much. The program works exceptionally well and the interface is easy to navigate, to us it doesn’t matter if it’s not pretty.

Technical Support

Technical support is offered via phone, live chat, email and online knowledge base. The Kaspersky website also has a relatively helpful virtual agent they call Sasha. She’s good for answering very basic questions, but for more detailed help you’re better off phoning or chatting with a live agent. The online Knowledge Base can help with a lot of the how-to questions, so if there is a function you’re trying to figure out and can’t, odds are the answer will be found using the Knowledge Base.

Software Updates

With such a simple interface to navigate, setting up automatic updates and scans is easy. Most users who are simply looking to safeguard their computer from viruses will set it to automatically update in the middle of the night and continue using the program without any interference. To minimize the impact on system performance, Kaspersky anti virus downloads and installs small updates frequently as opposed to larger updates over longer periods of time. The small frequent updates also ensure users are kept up-to-date with the latest definitions as soon as they’re available.

Features

In addition to the real-time protection and proactive detection, Kaspersky Antivirus comes with some very useful features. For example they use a hybrid approach to protecting their users by combining protection based on cloud technology as well as on the PC itself. This combination allows for the program to use real-time data from the cloud, but not depend on the cloud to protect the PC - it’s the best of both worlds.

Other notable features include: instant safety checks on files and websites; gamer mode, allowing users to run full-screen programs without having annoying pop-ups interrupt; URL advisor, which shows whether a link is safe to proceed to; anti-screen-locker helps unblock your PC if it gets infected with ransom-ware; anti-phishing technology to protect users’ digital identity, and a virtual keyboard for entering sensitive information into web forms.

Lastly if you’re running Kaspersky Antivirus on Windows Vista or Windows 7, a handy feature is the Kaspersky Gadget which provides quick access to the main features of the application such as the virtual keyboard, protection status, initiating scans and more. Files can also be dragged and dropped onto the gadget for an instant manual scan.

Final Verdict

For those looking for the basics of virus protection and online protection, Kaspersky Antivirus delivers just that. While you may get a few more features with other programs, those offered in Kaspersky Antivirus are powerful and dependable. If you’re still weary and want extra protection like a two-way firewall and parental controls, for a slightly higher price (and sometimes reduced to the same price) Kaspersky Internet Security might suit you better. Regardless of your choice, you’ll be in good hands.
