Do you remember when the # symbol was just a button on your phone’s keypad? Well, what was known as a pound sign back then is now known as a hashtag in the social media universe. Using hashtags is what set Twitter apart from every other social media site. Now, Facebook wants in on this trend.

You may recall when Facebook released the hashtag feature at the beginning of this summer. Some love the idea while others think the hashtags should be kept in the twitter world. For all you skeptics: don’t shoot down the idea just yet because hashtags create great opportunities especially for small and medium-sized businesses! Read on to learn about some of the benefits of using hashtags.

1. Expose your company to the right people.
Using the right hashtags is similar to using keywords for search engines. You want to use hashtags that relate to your company so that you are exposed to the right type of people who may be interested in your products or services.  Also, think of all the people who are on Facebook that may come across your posts and page because of the hashtags you use. Users who have never visited or “liked” your page will now be able to find you, creating new customers for your business.

Let’s look at an example. Maybe you own your own café. You don’t just sell coffee. You may also offer #freewifi, #glutenfreepastries, or you may even do #catering. People are searching for businesses that offer these products and services on a regular basis. So, by using these keywords, you will attract the right customers. Remember to not be annoying by putting a million hashtags in one post. You will annoy your followers which may lead to them “unliking” your page.

2. Know what’s trending and listen to your customers.
Businesses often overlook the ability to listen to what their customers are saying on social media. Using hashtags allows you to see what your customers are talking about. You can track what customers are saying and what their opinions are to understand what is trending. This will provide insight on how to market your products and services to your customers. Hashtags are great for seeing what people are saying about your brand and their experiences with your company. This is valuable information! Plus, your customers will be very loyal and happy knowing that their voices are being heard.

3. Make promotions easy.
Are you running a contest or launching a new product? Adding hashtags to your posts is a great way to gain exposure to the contest, new product, or anything else you are promoting. Hashtags will help you get more traffic to your page, leading to more “likes” and exposure to your brand. You will also be able to track activity online to see how successful your hashtags are in bringing more people to your page, which is great for helping you improve your next promotion.
