Updated September 2022
Planning to start a new online business or move your website to a different hosting? With thousands of hosting companies out there, it's hard to know which one is right for you. In this post, we’ll explore one of the most reputable hosting companies in the world: IONOS. How does IONOS stack up as a hosting provider?
Our goal is to help you take an informed look at what IONOS has to offer and decide whether they’re the right hosting company for your specific case.
IONOS was founded in Montabaur, Germany, in 1988. The company changed its name to United Internet in 2000 and moved its hosting products to the brand 1&1 Internet AG.
After merging with ProfitBricks in 2008, 1&1 Internet AG would be renamed 1&1 IONOS. Finally, in August 2021, the company simplified its name to IONOS.
Currently, IONOS has two locations in Germany and one in Pennsylvania. Additionally, it operates 6 data centers across the EU and the US.
According to IONOS, the company hosts more than 12 million domains for over 8 million customers.
IONOS Plans & Pricing (2022)
What does IONOS have to offer? This hosting provider delivers a wide selection of services tailored to the needs of different customer profiles.
The company's catalogue includes:
- Shared Hosting
- VPS Hosting
- Dedicated Hosting
- Managed WordPress Hosting
- Cloud Server Hosting
In this section, we'll analyze them one by one.
Shared hosting is the most affordable type of hosting. It’s ideal for small websites that run on a tight budget. However, the low price comes with considerable limitations.
IONOS offers three shared hosting options:
- The Essential Plan starts at $4/month for the first year. This plan only includes one website.
- The Business Plan starts at an incredible $0.50/month for the first year but renews at $10/month. This plan supports unlimited projects, thanks to its unlimited storage.
- The Expert Plan starts at $8/month for the first year and renews at $16/month. Besides unlimited web projects, this plan also includes maximum CPU & MEM resources, SiteScan malware protection, and access to a Content Delivery Network (CDN).
IONOS shared plans are a good option if your hosting budget ranges from $6 to $16/month (billed annually). Each shared hosting option comes with:
- Free domain for a year
- Professional email address
- Free wildcard SSL certificate
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- 24/7 support
Managed WordPress Hosting
Compared to shared hosting, Managed WordPress Hosting guarantees superior security, performance, and scalability. Managed WordPress Hosting plans include automated backups and updates, among other unbeatable features.
IONOS offers 3 Linux-based Managed WordPress Hosting plans:
- The Essential Plan starts at $3/month for the first year and renews at $4/month.
- The Business Plan starts at $1/month for the first year and renews at $8/month.
- The Unlimited Plan starts at $8/month for the first year and renews at $16/month.
The Essential Plan can only support one domain, with up to 10,000 monthly visitors. It includes:
- 25 GB of SSD storage
- One email address
- Two MariaDB databases
The Business Plan, on the other hand, can support up to 25,000 monthly users. It includes:
- 100 GB of SSD storage
- 5 email addresses
The Unlimited Plan, the most complete option, includes:
- Unlimited SSD storage
- 10 email addresses
- Unlimited number of WordPress projects
Despite the generous SSD storage, this plan is only recommended for up to 25,000 monthly visitors. However, unlike its counterparts, it delivers your sites’ heaviest assets through Cloudflare’s Railgun Content Delivery Network. This guarantees a highly competitive performance for users across the globe.
All plans include automatic malware detection and removal, automatic WordPress updates, a Wildcard SSL certificate, a free domain, and a list of recommended WordPress themes.
Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting plans operate on servers programmed to divide and dedicate hardware resources to specific accounts.
IONOS provides two VPS hosting plans: Standard plans and memory-optimized plans. In this section, we’ll focus on the standard plans. But, if you’re interested in this type of hosting, we recommend you check them out.
IONOS’ Virtual Private Server standard plans are:
- VPS S provides a 1vCore CPU, 512 MB RAM, and 10GB SSD storage.
- VPS M provides a 2-vCore CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 80GB of SSD storage.
- VPS L provides a 2-vCore CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 120GB of SSD storage.
- VPS XL provides a 4-vCore CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and 160GB of SSD storage.
- VPS XXL provides a 6-vCore CPU, 12 GB of RAM, and 240GB of SSD storage.
All VPS plans include:
- Linux hosting and Windows hosting (optional)
- SSL Wildcard Certificate
- Unlimited Traffic
- Up to 250 email accounts
- 2 GB of storage capacity per inbox
You can choose to store your website in a data center in the US, the UK, Spain, or Germany.
VPS S, IONOS’ base VPS standard plan, starts at $2.00/month, and you can try it risk-free for 30 days. The top plan, VPS XXL, starts at $35.00/month. The memory-optimized VPS plans range from $15/month to $45/month.
While IONOS offers 5 VPS plans and is extremely competitive pricing-wise, you could get more generous features with other providers.
Other hosting companies offer VPS hosting services across a broader price range, providing features like unlimited bandwidth and free migration. But, to take advantage of those options, you may need a larger budget.
Dedicated Server Plans
A Dedicated Server Plan lets you harness the full power of a server since your site’s the only one there.
IONOS offers four different Linux-based dedicated hosting plans:
Windows is also available.
Plans may include traditional hard drives (HDD) or solid-state drives (SSD). Prices will differ according to the type of drive you choose.
For instance, the A8i SSD plan costs $45/month for one year (which then becomes $65/month) and includes:
- A 2.4 GHz Intel Atom C2750 CPU
- 8 GB of RAM
- 240 GB of storage
- Unlimited data transfers
Meanwhile, the HDD equivalent goes for $70/month and comes with 1,000 GB of storage.
All of IONOS Dedicated Server Plans include:
- Sitelock malware protection
- Access to the Cloudflare Railgun CDN
Cloud Server Hosting
Cloud hosting is becoming increasingly popular. Unlike translational hosting, it distributes resources across several servers. By contrast, traditional hosting relies on a single server.
IONOS’ cloud hosting plans start at $0.0054/hour (with a maximum charge of $4/month) for a single-core CPU, 512 MB of RAM, and 30 GB of SSD storage.
Pricing starts at $0.4/month for 24 cores, 48 GB RAM, and 480 GB SSD.
Both managed and unmanaged options are available. Additionally, IONOS can provide customized plans.
Website Builder Plan
IONOS offers three website builder plans:
- The Starter Plan provides limited customization options.
- The Plus Plan provides editing capabilities in HTML and CSS.
- The Pro Plan allows for an even greater degree of customization.
Prices range from $1/month to $10/month for the first 12 months.
Each website builder plan includes a free domain for a year and a professional email address.
Reseller Hosting Plans
As of this writing, IONOS doesn’t offer reseller hosting plans.
IONOS doesn’t offer eCommerce hosting. Instead, the company offers tools that help small businesses sell online. These solutions include:
